Professor Emeritus in Learning and instruction, at the University of Southern California, Stephen Krashen is a major figure in the development of second language teaching, whose work on the Natural Approach in the 1980s and development of the Monitor Model, later known as the Input Hypothesis, underpinned Communicative Language Teaching approaches which are still used today. 

Krashen's second language learning model comprised 5 components

  • the natural order hypothesis
  • the acquisition/learning hypothesis
  • the monitor
  • the input hypothesis
  • the affective filter

Also active as an educator outside the field of second language acquisiton, Krashen has contributed to literacy development and bilingual education.
