Modelling

1961

Modelling consists in the imitation of another's behavior.  This term was coined by Albert Bandura in his theory of reciprocal determinism.  He saw imitation or modelling as a major source of learning, and demonstrated  the effect of this type of observational learning in the famous Bobo doll experiments.

Bandura set four conditions for observational learning: the learner must

  1. pay attention to the behavior
  2. retain or remember the behavior
  3. be able to replicate it, and
  4. have the motivation to do so.
