Lev Vygotsky

portrait de Lev Vygotsky

(Russia 1896-1934)

This pioneering Russian psychologist worked on the importance of social interaction and cultural factors in cognitive development.  He wrote the majority of his work  in the last decade of his short life.  This work only became widely known in the West through the publication of translations some three decades later (Thought in Language, 1962; Mind in Society, 1978).  Vygotskyan socio-constructivist thought has become a major influence in educational research and practice since the 1990s, and reached second language researchers like James Lantolf under the banner of sociocultural theory in the past decade.
