Jerome Seymour Bruner

A developmental psychologist and educationalist who trained at Harvard University in the late 1930s and early 40s, Bruner has been highly influential in the development of constructivist models of learning and teaching since the 1960s.  He worked with Miller at Harvard's Centre for Cognitive Studies and was an important voice in the US post-Sputnik education debates, advocating a type of discovery learning similar to Dewey's experiential education.  A professor at Oxford University and then the New York Institute for the Humanities,  his work in both psychology and education produced the influential concepts of scaffolding and spiral learning.
