Community of Practice

1991

Lave argues that learning can occur outside the teacher-pupil relationship, in contexts where learners start as newcomers or apprentices and gain mastery in the process of becoming full members of the group.  Such groups are called communities of practice.

A naturally occurring and evolving collection of people who together engage in particular kinds of activity, and who come to develop and share ways of doing things – ways of talking, beliefs, values, and practices – as a result of their joint involvement in that activity.

(Galagan, 1993)
